Augie has had Epilepsy since he was a very young child. No one knows exactly why or how. Most of his life he suffered from simple partial seizures …people would say "Augie is zoning out, give him a minute" and about 30 seconds to 1 1/2 minutes later he was fine. But during his simple partial seizure, he couldn't talk much, just a few "hold on, just a sec" is what he would say. About once every 5 years until he was 15 years old, he would have a tonic clonic seizure (grand mal). Then, he didn't have any more tonic clonic seizures until he was 34 years old. This time he was driving a car in the middle of a highway and his passenger (who wasn't wearing a seatbelt - for some reason) could tell that something was wrong. His passenger quickly reached over and put his own seatbelt on, while Augie very calmly slowed the car from 65mph to 0mph (as if there were a red light in the distance. Well, we guess the woman behind him didn't actually believe that he was going to stop, because she rammed right into the back of him after he put the car into park in the center lane. Immediately after the car had been hit, Augie had a tonic clonic seizure. It is amazing that nobody was actually hurt from the accident, but that was just the beginning of Augie's journey of battling with his tonic clonic seizures. When increasing and changing medicines several times didn't seem to be helping to control these very violent seizures, Augie reached out to the Epilepsy Foundation in Phoenix. This is who introduced him to the wonderful doctor who gave him the "crazy" idea that brain surgery might actually help him. Of course, Cristie’s first reply when asked if we would consider brain surgery was "Uhh..Nooah!" Did he think we were nuts. Well, it was definitely a wise doctor. It just took a bit of research on Cristie’s part to realize how advanced neurosurgery has become and that she might have to listen to Augie and the doctor on this one. When our family moved back to Dallas in the summer of 2005 and Augie's doctor here said that he was the perfect candidate for brain surgery, how could we say no (we just started praying more). The temporal lobectomy that Augie had in October 2005 kept him seizure-free for almost 2 years. Amazing!
Augie's seizures came back, but not for too long. We are all very thankful that on February 1st, he will have been seizure-free for 1 year! His seizures are now being controlled by quite a bit of medicine, but it is working!!
Thank you for your support. Your contribution is greatly appreciated.

The Epilepsy Foundation is committed to ensuring that those affected by seizures and epilepsy live life with dignity, equality, and independence.
